Our Transformation Continues

I’m very pleased to announce that the McMaster University Library is looking for four new librarians! These positions are new and offer the future incumbent an opportunity to be the first in a newly defined position for our organization, and in one case what may be a truly unique position! The McMaster Library is going through a very exciting transformation and we’re looking for creative, innovative risk-takers who are eager contribute to our process and to the transformation of our profession. Digital Strategies Librarian

McMaster University Library is seeking an innovative and technologically knowledgeable librarian who will provide vision and leadership in the development of a digitization strategy or McMaster University Libraries and will lead projects which will develop technologies supporting the delivery of digital library services.

Digital Technologies Librarian

McMaster University Library is seeking an innovative and technologically knowledgeable librarian to manage support for the Horizon ILS and local systems at McMaster University ibrary by developing a responsive, service-oriented structure that will support library users and staff in their use of library systems. The position will contribute to the ongoing development of quality electronic information systems in a rapidly changing environment to meet present and future teaching, study, and research needs of the University by implementing innovative, new technologies. The Digital Technologies Development Librarian is expected to take a leading role in the application of open source solutions in the McMaster University Library environment and to participate in local, provincial and national initiatives in this area.

Teaching and Learning Librarian

McMaster University Libraries is seeking a creative, innovative and experienced librarian to lead the growth and development of its dynamic instruction and information literacy program.

Immersive Learning Librarian (aka “Gaming Librarian”)

McMaster University Libraries is seeking a creative, innovative and experienced librarian to provide leadership in establishing McMaster University Library as the premier North American academic library in the implementation of innovative, highly engaging, habitable environments for teaching and learning. This includes the development and support of educationally sound virtual worlds, simulations and games. While the position will be based at the Science and Engineering Library, the successful candidate will serve as a link between the libraries and the academic faculties involved in immersive learning environments (Engineering and Humanities). The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting ongoing research of faculty, staff and students; in collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Librarian, in facilitating the integration of library instruction into the curriculum;
and in collaboration with the Digital Strategies Librarian, in providing leadership to the campus community with respect to providing access to, promoting, archiving and preserving locally produced instructional resources. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceiving, designing, implementing, operating, and evaluating innovative teaching and learning environments relevant to the campus community.

Changes in staffing

January 13, 2007

It’s been awhile since my last post but we’ve been in the process of realigning staff. Today a general announcement went to staff notifying them of the shifts from copy cataloging. Staff from this area are begin reassigned to the following tasks:

Two of the copy catalogers will be moving to the newly-blended area of Mills Circulation/Reserve/ILL where they will provide additional support for the growing e-reserves program and duties associated with ILL.One copy cataloger will move into E-maintenance.

One will assume a newly-created position of Library Assistant, Digital Access, reporting to Maps to facilitate the digitization process, prepare metadata, and provide public service.
One will take on new duties as Library Assistant, Learning Technologies and Digital Projects, reporting to the Digital
Projects Librarian.

Finally, one copy cataloger will take on a newly-created position of Library Assistant, Teaching, Learning and Research and will work half-time on the Mills Research Help Desk. The rest of her day will be spent providing support to both the Mills Learning Commons and the liaison program.
